"Ida y vuelta" ("round trip") in it's strict sense is a term used by flamencos to describe those musical forms that have "returned" to Spain from the Caribbean and Latin America. The guajira is an example of an "ida y vuelta" that began in Cuba (with harmonies brought by the Spanish) and returned to Spain to be "transformed" into the flamenco form that features a 12-count rhythm and alternate harmonic changes.

In a broader sense, "ida y vuelta" is about our own personal journeys, both literal and spiritual. The music on this CD occurred because of exploration and a fascination with other cultures. It has been challenging and, at times, risky to leave our "comfort zones," but, perhaps, the potential reward is a richer and more colorful palette.

Las Guitarras de España   (The Guitars of Spain)

The music of Las Guitarras de España arguably requires to the "widest possible" definition of "Spanish Guitar" music. The ensemble is most influenced by traditional flamenco and Spanish classical forms. However, the listener will also note Middle Eastern and Latin American influence on our music.

This CD features many of our own compositions based on traditional flamenco and Cuban musical forms. But we could not entirely neglect the wonderful music from our own culture. As a result, elements of American jazz, blues, and gospel have found their way into the material
